Everyone knows that we are supposed to have a financial safety net – a sort of fallback cushion in case something unexpected happens that requires us to spend beyond our norm. The problem is that for many who are living the frugal lifestyle these days it is nearly impossible to save for a rainy day because we are living in a financial drought where almost every penny of our income is going toward keeping our bills current. How then can someone in a financial bind like this still build a safety net?

At one time or another we have all wondered what it would be like to earn a living working on the Internet and while some have succeeded at making money online, the majority of online moneymaking schemes are just that – schemes.

Get Serious About Saving

If you are serious about building a savings safety net then you are going to need somewhere to save that money. Bankrate.com has a simple tool for searching for the right savings account for your needs and many of them don’t require a minimum deposit. Set up a savings account to be used for no other purpose but to build your safety net. That’s the first step!

Have A Virtual Yard Sale

We all have accumulated things over the years that are perhaps not as useful as they once were. Maybe you don’t have the time or the space to arrange a yard sale at home, but there’s nothing saying that you can’t put together a virtual yard sale in your spare time. With online auction sites like Ebay as well as free ad sites like Craigslist, it is easier than ever to clear out the attic, pare down the closet clutter and pocket some cash at the same time.

Read Your Junk Mail

Websites like Inbox Dollars and Send Earnings actually pay you to open their emails. It isn’t much (about $.02 each), but you’re going to get junk mail anyway, and in the time it takes you to delete it you could have earned a couple of pennies. Each of these sites also offer surveys and other ways to earn and I only recommend them here because I have been a member for over 2 years and have been paid by them on more than one occasion.

Save Your Pennies

Everybody has a change jar and most of us just let it pile up anyway so why not designate that spare change to go toward your savings safety net? Even if it is no more than $5 a month, that’s $5 closer to having a financial cushion when you need it in the future!

It amazes me how many people simply toss their Sunday newspaper coupon circulars aside either unaware or unimpressed that those circulars are no less valuable than the money in their wallets. For years I have held to the belief that ignoring grocery coupons was the same as throwing money away and you would be hard pressed to convince me otherwise considering the thousands of dollars I have saved every year by using grocery store coupons.

Given the success and popularity of the past two theme months we just have to keep things going. During the month of March at Gone Frugal we are going to talk about coupons, couponing and how to save big bucks on your grocery budget! Whether you are brand new to using coupons or a seasoned pro, there will be something for everyone this month!

This month we will cover topics including: where to find coupons, how to save and organize them and how to use them to get the most savings possible. Of course we will be sharing plenty of links and insider info as always so stay tuned all month long!

Convenience foods – those easy-to-use packets, pouches, boxes and bottles that make our lives so much easier because they make it possible for us to prepare meals despite our hectic on-the-go lifestyles. They are also full of additives, preservatives and heaven only knows what other chemicals that I just can’t bring myself to put into my body. Call it a personal crusade if you will, Gone Frugal has declared February Freedom from Convenience Foods Month.

Don’t worry, I’m not going to call Intervention and try to get you into a detox program for convenience food addicts. Instead we are going to provide you with lots of recipes and tips on how you can make your own convenience food mixes and recipes at home.

A lot of people say that making something from scratch is just too time consuming to make it worthwhile. That’s far from the truth and in February I plan to prove my point. When you make homemade convenience food mixes from scratch you are in complete control over each and every ingredient. Need to cut your sodium? When you make it yourself you can do it. Same with allergies and personal taste.

The best part of all is that most homemade convenience food mixes can be put together in minutes and for pennies. What’s more, it is a great way to help use some of those dried herbs and spices in your pantry that don’t get pulled out often enough.

Hang on, GFFs, February is going to rock your world!
